Welcome to the Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk - a unique affiliation between Baylor College of Medicine and Houston ISD.

In 2016, the Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk (BCMBAR) began transitioning from a general STEM magnet school serving grades pre K-8, to a middle school STEM magnet program (grades 6-8) focused specifically on biomedical sciences, with an emphasis on medicine and technology. An affiliation between Baylor College of Medicine and the Houston Independent School District, BCMBAR offers a rigorous, one-of-a-kind educational experience and features a unique curriculum developed by Baylor College of Medicine that includes courses in neuroscience, scientific decision making and biotechnology. Students also have the opportunity to interact with leading medical professionals from Baylor College of Medicine and other institutions in the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical complex.

Another important distinguishing characteristic of BCMBAR is that it allows students to thrive in a relatively small school setting. At Rusk, students, faculty, staff, parents and Houston’s East End community share a collective responsibility for student success. All BCMBAR students are expected to meet high standards in a variety of areas. In addition to the special courses created by Baylor College of Medicine, the school has HISD Advanced and High School spanish course requirements, and offers extra-curricular options. Importantly, BCMBAR also provides support to help students reach their full potential.
